The teams from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal have scheduled to play their matches in Pakistan for a single visit, after which they will be flown by a chartered flight to Dini. These teams will be joined by a team from India, resulting in a total of five participating teams.
If Sri Lanka insists on hosting matches, despite the hot weather in the UAE, teams may make reservations. In such a scenario, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will seek compensation, including the revenue generated from ticket sales.
Pakistan has also offered to host the TV production of matches in the country, but teams have expressed reservations about playing in the hot weather of UAE. If teams insist on playing matches in Sri Lanka, then PCB will seek monetary compensation including proceeds from ticket sales. If it is insisted to move the entire event to a neutral venue, then Pakistan will not participate. The PCB will hold a triangular tournament in the country on the same days as the Asia Cup, for which talks have already started.
Pakistan is supposed to host the Asia Cup in September this year, but India refused to visit due to which there is a cloud of doubt over the competition. Under this, only the Indian team’s matches would be played at neutral venues. The head of the management committee, Najam Sethi, went to the UAE for important meetings in the past few days, where he also interacted with the officials of the ICC and the Emirates Cricket Board.
Sources said that on Tuesday, Najam Sethi had a meeting with Vice President ACC Pankh Khebi, on this occasion he presented more details of the hybrid model. Sri Lankan Cricket President, Shami Salwake has also filed a lawsuit against ex-captain Arjuna Rana Tunga and is under a lot of pressure.
If Pakistan does not participate in the event, the broadcaster Star Sports will not pay $48 million because under the agreement there will be 2 matches between Pakistan and India. It should be remembered that in the last ACC meeting, Bangladesh had said in clear words that there would be no question of the Asia Cup without Pakistan, but they have objections to playing in the hot weather of UAE. Similarly, Afghanistan is also helping in tough times and PCB sent the team to Sharjah to play the series.
According to the new proposal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal will come to Pakistan only once to play their matches, after which all five teams will be sent to Dubai by a chartered flight. Panj questioned how this would be logistically possible. The broadcaster would also not feel comfortable carrying the UV equipment across two countries, to which the reply was that it would only have to go from Pakistan to the UAE once, there was no question of frequent visits.
Sources further said that if the insistence on moving the entire event to a neutral venue continues, then Pakistan will not participate. PCB will hold a triangular tournament in the country for which talks have already started. However, the authorities hope that such a situation will not happen, the new proposals have proposed appropriate solutions to each problem, and UAE will also use its influence on India.
It is expected that a final decision will come out this month. The new contract value can be less than half if Pakistan does not participate in the event. In the 6-nation Asia Cup, the hosts of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Nepal are to participate.
