Power-Sharing Formula and Coalition Talks in Pakistan

Infostani Internationa: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has laid out an initial power-sharing formula for the formation of the upcoming federal government. This plan, which includes the distribution of key positions and ministries, is set to be discussed with potential allies to establish a sustainable coalition.

Preliminary Power-Sharing Formula and Coalition Talks in Pakistan’s Government Formation

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has devised an initial power-sharing formula for the formation of the upcoming federal government. They intend to discuss this formula during talks with potential allies to establish a sustainable coalition.

PML-N sources indicate that the initial formula proposes granting the post of prime minister to the PML-N, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) receiving the posts of president and speaker. Additionally, the post of deputy speaker could be allocated to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) or any independent members joining the coalition. The PML-N aims to retain the finance ministry, while other ministries will be distributed among allies through mutual consultation.

The decision regarding the nomination for the positions of Senate chairman and deputy chairman will be made in consultation with allies after the Senate elections.

Formation of Coalition Government: Key Figures and Preliminary Discussions

Consultations on the formation of the coalition government are expected to involve key figures such as Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Maulana Fazlur Rahman, and Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.

Preliminary discussions on forming the coalition government have taken place between PML-N leaders and those from PPP, MQM-P, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI). In these meetings, initial consultations were held.

Regarding the prime ministerial post, while PML-N desires it, the allies may prefer an alternative candidate. Shahbaz Sharif is considered an alternative candidate for the PML-N.

Updates on Coalition Government Formation and Decision-Making Processes

PPP sources indicate that Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has been nominated as their candidate for premiership and may not withdraw from this stance. However, PML-N could support Bilawal after consultation.

Efforts are underway to establish a joint committee of all parties to finalize the coalition government formation. This committee will make recommendations for government formation.

The decision to join the coalition government will be taken by the MQM-P’s coordination committee and JUI’s Maulana Fazlur Rahman, respectively.

Initial consultations on government formation have commenced, and progress is anticipated soon. The PML-Quaid will also be involved in future consultations, aiming to attract more independent lawmakers.
